It was night. The sky was as dark as black velvet, shimmering with silver stars that danced across the shadowy canvas. Kimmik crept along the branch she was perched on. She usually wasn't up this late, but she had always loved the sky at night. Besides, the forest was surprisingly active at night, and she hadn't been able to catch any good gossip while the sun was up.
She raised her muzzle towards the sky, her soft brown eyes taking in the glowing orb that was the moon. Because Kimmik was a weevil, a type of insect, she was greatly ignored by most other animals. Which was fine by her. She hated being noticed; it made it that much harder to eavesdrop.
Yes, Kimmik loved gossip. It was the only way she could find out about anything. She was horribly shy, but naturally attracted to exciting things. So the only solution in her mind was to listen and not be heard. The past three days she had been sorely disappointed. All the news she had heard was simple local nonsense; nothing big, nothing exciting. Hopefully tonight would be more promising.
She looked up as a rustle broke the silence of night. She scuttled along the branch towards where she heard the noise. Yes, there was someone or something down there. She edged to the end of the branch and hoped to gods that she wouldn't be detected.
